ARSENE WENGER PUBLICLY ADMITS TENSION BETWEEN HIM AND JOSE MOURINHO
Recalling the 1998-2005 biggest premier league rivalry till date,
Arsene Wenger admits to Soccer Saturday that his relationship with Mourinho has
been ‘tense’. He adds however that the duo respect each other nonetheless,
because they understand each other’s suffering.
Mourinho and Wenger have had many clashes over the years, but
least forgotten is former famously
describing the latter back in 2014 as ‘a specialist in failure’. But Arsene
insists that their relationship is more positive than people imagine.
“It is very difficult when your play is amongst fellow managers,
they get reported things that you have not necessarily said.” Arsene said “In
press conferences, they say Wenger said this and that, even if it is taken out
of context and people get upset.”
He continues saying:
“It is very difficult to keep it calm and quiet, but over the
distance, the respect always takes over. Do you know why? We all suffer
defeats, we all suffer disappointment and we all know that we suffer a lot. You
always have respect for people who suffer, unless you are completely not human
at all. You have to feel empathy for people who are in the same job as you.”
Wenger proceeded to liken his relationship with Mourinho as being
similar to the tense rivalry savoured with Sir Alex Ferguson, during those
reigning years.
“Those days, after you had Chelsea and Liverpool was always there.
But we were the dominant teams and I just think every game had intensity,
tension, rivalry and the challenges were always on the borderline.”
Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho will
clash again on super Sunday.
